Autumn is a beautiful, cozy time, but don’t put off these little maintenance tasks that can turn into big headaches!
- Clean all gutters
- This is something you may have to do more than once if there are large trees near your home or properties
- Prune branches
- Any branches that hang over or near a building or utility line should be trimmed back. Also, bushes and flowers near homes and outbuildings need to be kept trimmed with a couple of feet clearance from the sides and roofs of buildings.
- Inspect roofs
- Summer storms can cause damage that’s easy to miss, so check your roofs for missing/damaged shingles, or loose screws on metal roofs.
- Check fire extinguishers
- Ensure that any fire extinguishers are properly charged
- Change batteries in smoke alarms
- Additionally, if your home uses gas heat, make sure you have a CO2 detector in place and working properly.
Bonus: Check that ceiling fans are set to turn clockwise, pushing warm air down into your living area.
